How Double D Whitetails began.

Double D Whitetails began in November 2023, inspired by a hunting trip my son Brandon and I took to a preserve in Texas the month before. I was blown away by the number and quality of mature bucks we saw.

For years, my wife and I had worked hard to make our property the best it could be for growing big whitetail bucks. Whitetail deer have been a passion of mine since childhood, but that trip made me realize how difficult it would be to achieve the quality and numbers of deer I envisioned with our current approach.

Shortly after returning home, I made the decision to develop a preserve on a portion of our farm. As I began researching the deer industry, I quickly learned that a quality breeding program would be essential if we wanted to produce the caliber of bucks I dreamed of raising. What seemed like a simple idea at the time turned out to be much bigger than I ever imagined.

Deep Agricultural Roots

A natural next step.

To be honest, Denise and I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Even so, she supported the vision from the very beginning, although she may have quietly wondered how we were going to pull it all off. Construction on our first deer pen began in November, and our first deer arrived the following February.

Since then, we have learned an incredible amount about deer farming. Having farmed cropland for many years and spent decades developing wildlife habitat and hunting areas on our property, the transition felt like a natural next step. My agricultural roots run deep — I grew up on a farm in Louisiana where we raised crops, beef cattle, and dairy cattle, and Denise spent much of her childhood on her grandparent's farm in East Texas. Those farm backgrounds have proven invaluable as we've learned to raise deer and build the infrastructure required to support them.

We are grateful to the many people who have generously shared their knowledge and experience with us. Countless hours spent on the phone with fellow deer farmers have helped us navigate the learning curve. My first Kansas deer farming contact, and one of our greatest mentors, has been Jake Lamb. We'd also like to thank Randy, Ian, Kody, Junior, Nathan, John, and DD herself for the many hours they spent helping construct pens and build our preserve fence.

A Family Operation

Run by family, built on partnership.

Denise is an essential part of the operation. She can single-handedly feed, dart, and treat deer, and she has handled tagging and caring for newborn fawns on her own. Her patience, dedication, and ability with animals continue to impress me. Many of the things she does routinely are tasks I couldn't do myself.

For years, we have shared some truly exceptional Kansas whitetail hunting with a limited number of hunters. Today, Double D Whitetails allows us to expand those opportunities and help more people experience the excitement, challenge, and fulfillment of pursuing world-class whitetails. We look forward to helping others live their whitetail dream while continuing to build a program that reflects our passion for deer, family, and the outdoors.
